Second Church, Dorchester

Facade

The 1908 Hook & Hastings pipe organ at Second Church Dorchester is a large and important example of Boston organ building around the turn of the century. It is a rebuild of an instrument built the year previous which was damaged by fire right after installation. The organ features a large terraced console and tubular pneumatic action. Although the instrument still turns on, it has sadly suffered from a lack of maintence and some water damage over the years leaving it largly unplayable.

Our work with the instrument consists of covering it to protect the pipes from future damage as well as helping the church to evaluate their options for restoration. We are currently in the process of determining the best course of action for its preservation.
